Company
Information
EDP System Services,
Inc. was founded in 1981 to develop business software. It produced
its first
bar code software in 1984, and at the same time
began its long association with Intermec. The first version of SIMBA
was produced in 1986 for Togiak Fisheries in Togiak, Alaska. It used
Intermec Trakkers to drive the label printer and collect data. The office
side of the system did no data management; it only printed bar code menus.
By the next year, SIMBA was much more sophisticated – a system
delivered to the Red Salmon plant in Naknek, Alaska had substantial reporting
capabilities, written for DOS in Clipper. In 1988, Chugach Fisheries
ordered systems for six plants, and drove the development of more features.
In 1990, based on the prototype at the Red Salmon plant, Wards Cove bought
SIMBA for 9 Alaska plants. Although Wards Cove sold their operations
in 2002, many of their Intermec 8646 label printers are still in service.
When the office side of SIMBA advanced from DOS to Windows, the production
side advanced from Trakker to DOS, running on a Linx terminal, a DOS
computer in a hardened industrial case. Now the production side is a
Windows program, running on a one-piece touch screen Windows PC. Over
40 SIMBA systems have been installed. Customers include Smoki Foods,
Trident, Norquest, and Inlet Salmon.
